If You Want to Go Somewhere in Your Business, Set and Achieve Goals
It's easy to talk about, easy to say you'll set goals but difficult to actually set the goals and then achieve them. Why? Because we really don't think about what we want, we aren't specific, we aren't objective and we don't follow through. Not only that, we are incongruent about our goals. What we say we want, our body language says we don't want! It's very confusing for us as well as the people around us. If you want to increase your bottom line in your business or build and develop new relationships in your personal life, you must begin with a goal! Most people want to set and achieve goals so here's a step by step process to get you on your way.
1. Develop a deep desire around something you want to accomplish. It's something you really, really want! Not spouse or Mom or Dad's idea--but what you really want! How can you tell if it's what you really want vs. what someone else wants? Begin writing a list of the benefits or positive things that will come out of achieving this goal. How will it advance you? What advantages will it bring to you? Get a sheet of paper and begin to make the list. If you stop at 5 or 10 things, it may not be a goal worth going for at this time. If you get to 100 or 150 reasons, the time for achieving this goal may be now! This is a good test to see if it's your goal or someone else's. Next, get in touch with how your body is feeling as you write out those benefits. Do these benefits get you excited and feeling really terrific or drag you down? For goal achievement, your thoughts and actions or body and mind must be in it together otherwise you will experience disappointment and frustration.
2. Write your goals down! So important! Why? Because when you write them down, you grant them power! Yes, power! And power is what gets the pump started on a cold morning! The process of writing it down and granting it power says to the subconscious: "Hey, I'm serious about achieving this goal. Start looking for ways to make it happen because I'm doing everything I can!" Make sure to be specific when you write your goal down. If you want to increase your sales--be specific. Say, "An increase of 25% in total revenues." If you want a new job, say, "A position where I am respected and my input is valued and taken advantage of on a daily basis by my boss." For a new relationship, say: "I am surrounded by kind and caring people." Just saying you want more money or a better relationship won't get it. Be specific. When you are specific you are acting consciously and subconsciously to achieve the goal. Next, monitor yourself when your inner voice talks about your goal. Is the voice excited and happy or does that voice sound tiresome and boring? Then check to see what you body language is saying when you're thinking about your goals. Are your shoulders back, head upright, smile on your face and gleam in your eyes? Or are your shoulders slumped, head down, frowning and shaking your head? Make certain that your body language complements your inner dialogue. When you are this specific in creating congruence between your thoughts and your body, you are well on your way to achieving your goal.
3. Set a deadline for your goal. Take some time to think about where you are now in relation to your goal and how long you believe it will take you to achieve the goal. Set the farthest date out. For example, if you're making $50,000 a year now, unless you win lotto, it's highly unlikely that you will be making $150,000 next month. A rule of goal setting that I like to follow for salary increase is to set a goal that will add a 25% increase to your salary within a year. Use the same percentage for revenue increase. For relationships, instead of setting a deadline that you will meet Mr. or Ms. Right within 6 months, why not say, "I am meeting 10 new people each month." Mr. or Ms. Right just may be in those 10 new contacts. That's a goal worth going for and if it takes less time--celebrate! Remember, observe your inner dialogue and your body language. If they don't complement, you'll have a difficult time setting and achieving your goals.
4. Create a plan. Now combine everything into a one or two page worksheet. If you go beyond 2 pages, you'll have a burden to tend to rather than a goal to achieve. On your plan, list all the activities that you will do to achieve this goal. If you have delegated something to someone else, be sure to put their name next to the goal and the promise date for completion. Prioritize the list of activities and leave a space to make a check mark as you achieve them. I also like to scratch through the item when I achieve it. It's a good visual milestone. Be sure to give yourself a good pat on the back when you scratch through an item.
5. Visualize achieving your goal. By this, I mean, get a clear picture in your mind of your goal already achieved. So, you might visualize receiving your first paycheck with the increased salary or meeting the special person in your life. Another visualization I suggest is seeing your ideal customer walk in and writing you a large check and shaking your hand! Keep visualizing the pictures you want over and over in your mind. Also include yourself in the picture and make certain that your body language agrees with what is happening. If you are meeting Mr. Right, is there a smile on your face? Is your head held erect? Are your arms at your side in an open, welcoming gesture? This takes you away from focusing and visualizing on what you don't want to what you really do want and it includes you in the picture! It's very powerful!
6. Be persistent! It pays off! Ask anyone who is! What ever you do, never give up on your goal. Even when all seems lost or you feel completely forsaken, keep plugging along and make certain that your verbal dialogue and your body language are congruent. If they are, that's when you're closest to achieving your goal. Something to remember, when you first begin working on a goal, you may encounter roadblocks that you had not even thought about and you think they are insurmountable. Now is the time to be assured that you are on track. Anytime I set a goal and huge obstacles come in my way, I know I have truly engaged that goal. There's another little saying that I repeat constantly: "Never put a period where God has put a comma." Just repeating this little saying pushes the Monster attitude out of my life and ushers in my Angel attitude.
7. Review your plan regularly. Most corporate plans are created for a credentialing organization and then put on the top shelf after credentialing. (I know, I wrote strategic plans for hospitals!) Don't do it! Use your plan to keep you on track to achieving what you really want! Take time on a weekly basis to review and verify that this is where you really want to go and this is really what you want. I typically review mine on Fridays. Some people prefer a quarterly review. Once a year just doesn't cut it! Some of you may even want to do it daily! Go for it! Just remember--as you review your goals, see yourself as having completed the specific goal. Feel it, smell it, taste it--whether it's more money, a new car, a new partner, a new job. Then as you move through your day, ask yourself, "Is my verbal dialogue and body language supporting my goal achievement?" If the answer is YES, you are on the right path. If the answer is NO (be honest with yourself here), you know what you need to do!
8. Analyze your results. Was the goal achieved on time? Did you get what you wanted? Did you get something close but not exactly? Do you want something bigger or better? Do you want to do it better next time? Did you take the time to acknowledge yourself for what you did achieve? Are you grateful for the result even if it's not what you wanted? How would you do it differently? What did your emotions and feelings and intentions say about you and your goal during the process? Answer these questions to identify beliefs and attitudes that may be blocking you from achieving the desired goal.
9. Decide on and set the next goal. This brings you full circle. Goals can be short term or long term. Most business goals are 12 to 18 months out. Some people plan 25 years, 10 years, or even 5 years out. It's kind of fun to have all of them! And remember you can always change your goals. Change is a continuous process and you can change anything you want. Just set a goal for achieving the change!
Remember that your future doesn't get better by hoping it will, it gets better by setting a goal, creating a plan and then making sure that your verbal and non-verbal communication (intentions, feelings and emotions) are aligned with the goal achievement. You'll be surprised how much more you will accomplish.
