Immigrants Choosing Eastern States Of Australia

New figures released by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship showed that

skilled migrants are choosing to settle in the Eastern states of Australia despite more opportunities for work and employment in the Western areas of Australia.

The figures were published in the department's Immigration Update 2010-11. It showed that skilled migrants entering Australia are choosing to reside in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. These Western states provide lesser employment opportunities as well as more competitive markets for labor and work.

The three Eastern states with the most number of new residents to the their standing populations in both 2010-11 were 65,735, 53,204 and 38,852 respectively, having a net increase in migration Down Under.

The Australian government has undertaken plans to entice more skilled migrants to the Western Australia mining industry, the numbers though fell by ten percent in the last financial year. The number of new permanent residents from overseas choosing to reside in Western Australia decreased from 35,532 to just 34,233.

According to Dr. Bob Birrell, a population expert at the Monash University found that these figures clearly indicate that government policy has failed in achieving the targets regarding migration plans. He added, "Employer nominations come first but they don't differentiate by the state or how crucial the occupation is, so we've got a very large program which is causing a lot of problems in Melbourne and Sydney... when Western Australia is crying out for migrants."

In response to these published data, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia has declared the need for over half a million more skilled workers by the year 2020 as there are many growing opportunities for foreign workers considering immigrating to Australia.

Another industry in dire need of skilled foreign workers is the tourism sector. It is projected for the next year alone, there is a need of nearly forty thousand workers specifically in this industry.

Many of the tourism sector staff has opted to move to the more lucrative mining sector because of higher wages. In a statement issued by Tourism Australia's Managing Director Andrew McEvoy, the industry is contemplating on granting special visas for skilled migrant workers to augment the current workforce.

He said, "I understand that there are more than 35,000 job vacancies in our industry today - and a lot are the entry level jobs. Many in the industry suggest that special visas are required to get the workers for these roles."

Despite Australia's stature as a world-class destination, the industry has been unable to take advantage in attracting more tourists to the country. Many negative issues abound, such as poor service and infrastructure, high Australian dollar exchange rate and high labor costs has turned off many possible tourists. It is hoped with the new influx of skilled workers for the tourist industry, many of the issues can be reversed to improve the Australian tourism industry.
