Impact of Illegal Immigration
Immigration has become a hot political issue in the USA as republican politicians pressurise the administration to tighten up on illegal US immigration while many democrats argue for an amnesty on illegal immigrants. Some people prefer to have changes in immigration law that would allow illegal immigrants to stay legally so that the taxes paid by newly legalized residents could be used to fund public services such as education and health care.
According to the Pew Hispanic Center report, illegal immigrants to US are mainly individuals who have entered the US without the necessary documents or who have overstayed temporary visas.
Studies indicate that the global financial crisis has had a large impact on drop in illegal immigration to America during the period 2008-2009. The main reason seems to be the shrink in the construction sector and other areas in which the illegal immigrants traditionally seek employment. Another reason could be the recession which leads to a surplus of American labour driving down the benefit of hiring illegal immigrants. It is estimated that over a million illegal immigrants have returned to Mexico since the beginning of the crisis.
It is stated that the Illegal USA immigration has both negative and positive impacts on the economy. First of all, the wages for low-skilled workers are reduced but at the same time the rest of America benefits by paying lower rates for things such as restaurant meals, agricultural produce and construction. Another negative impact of illegal immigration is on government expenditures because undocumented workers generally do not pay income taxes inspite of using schools and other government services in the US.
Illegal immigration is said to have has both positive and negative which are pretty strong but economists generally believe that the effect is a small net positive when averaged over the whole economy. Moreover, they say that the average wealth of an American is increased by less than 1 percent because of illegal immigration to US.
It was further stated that, the economic impact of illegal immigration is far smaller when compared to the other trends in the economy. Increased use of automation in manufacturing or the growth in global trade are reported to be the two big factors that have much higher impact on prices, wages and the health of the U.S. economy.
However, border enforcement has become strict in the United States and more states and local governments are taking measures to crack down the illegal US Immigration
