Importance of Soft Skills in MBA Education
In today`s competitive business world Soft Skills mixed with Hard skills is a perfect recipe to be successful
. Hard Skills means the technical skills to complete any responsibility. For Engineers it is knowledge of Machines while for Students of Masters of Business Administration (
MBA) it is the knowledge of core concepts in the related specialization such as Marketing, Finance, and International Business etc. Similarly every professional course requires basic technical skills. This technical knowledge is the first step towards a successful career
What we forget while providing these technical skills is that they also require a very important training which is must for their survival and growth in any industry. And what we forget is Soft skills, which includes areas like Interpersonal skills, leadership skills, effective communication skills and interpersonal skills. In our course structure we train students to handle machines, issues or number and are never teaches them to deal with people who are the most important component of any industry.
As the corporate world is expanding its wings in all directions and becoming MNC`s, the clients and employees needs strong Interpersonal skills to understand and communicate with each other in an effective manner. This Interpersonal skill includes negotiation skills, time management and well groomed personality. These skills are becoming important criteria for employee selection for both domestic and MNC companies.
If we talk about importance of soft skills for a MBA graduate, then these skills have been made compulsory for recruitment at management level. After this the top MBA Colleges have added soft skills as a compulsory paper in their MBA course structure. These soft skills are becoming important for managers. Whether it is marketing, banking, Human resource; in all areas of management excellent people skills are important not only for success but also t work effectively.
In most of these top MBA colleges this soft skill course has been named as Personality Development Programme (PDP). The main aim of this course is developing key skills such as
Personality grooming- Dressing and office etiquette
Stress Management
Group Discussion
English Communication Skills
Negotiation Skills
Interview Skills
Effective use of body language
Presentation skills
As discussed above, for corporate geographical boundaries hardly matters. Experts from all over the world are members of any project team in any MNC, they need t have meetings and discussions via Video Conferences, chat or emails. So cross cultural skills are too becoming part of these soft skills and
MBA students are now being taught this topic as well.
It is neither wise nor possible for anyone to overlook these skills. So it is important to have good hard or technical skill. So important is soft skill to get noticed and achieve maximum potential.
