Improving self esteem is of the utmost importance in today's world
. The statistics concerning this prevalent condition paint a very bleak future if the self confidence of our children continues to decrease. Yet, self esteem is more than just about confidence. It encompasses many areas and all will need to be addressed to reverse this disturbing trend.
1. Those who suffer from self esteem problems are more likely to become drug dependent than their peers. Drug usage can only compound this problem as once you are addicted it is very hard to stop. By improving self esteem, the usage of drugs by our children may decrease ensuring a brighter future for all.
2. By the time girls reach high school, only 29% report that they are happy with the way they are. This means 71% are unhappy which is scary if you stop to think about it. Out of every ten girls you pass on the street, seven suffer from low self esteem. One may even be your daughter, niece, or sister. Don't criticize; use positive statements as you would want others to do with your family members.
3. Studies estimate that only 15% of the population has enough self esteem to achieve their dreams. This means that an overwhelming majority are not living up to full potential. Imagine if the statistics were reversed and 85% had sufficient self esteem. The country could not be stopped. Work on your self esteem and take care not to damage that of others.
4. Between 50 and 70% of girls who are of normal weight see themselves as overweight. With such distorted self images, self esteem will suffer. This trend needs to be looked at, especially as it has been reported that 60% of girls in high school are currently trying to lose weight. Show role models who are a healthy weight and talk to your kids about anorexia and bulimia.
5. Self esteem is not only confidence, but much more. It is a feeling of deserving to be happy and loved. Also, liking yourself and thinking you are a good human being is a portion of healthy self esteem. Don't talk to yourself in a negative manner. If you catch yourself doing this, stop immediately and change to positive statements. It will make a difference.
