Improving your self confidence with better dental hygiene

Improving your confidence by improving dental Hygiene.

When you are first introduced to a stranger for the first time you form an immediate impression about that individual based purely on their appearance.

You may not be conscious that you are doing it but it is a fact that everyone does it. We normally refer to this as forming our first impression of the person, and as everyone of us is aware 'you never get a second chance to form that first impression.

Rightly or wrongly the first impression that we form of the person is to a large extent based on their general appearance. It has very little to do with their personality because at this point the person has possibly not uttered a word.

We form our impression of that person, albeit subconsciously, on the way they dress, their cleanliness, their overall manner and apparent attitude and various other additional factors that register with us. All of this takes place in a matter of split second and from that first meeting we, to a large extent decide whether we do, or do not actually like that individual ie we have formed our first impression be it good or bad!

You also learn a lot from looking the face of the individual. Do they appear to have a cheerful disposition, or do they appear sad, shy or reserced for example.

Are they young or reasonably youthful or are they elderly.

Are they working class (manual workers), do they work indoors or out of doors (is their faced weathered for example ) do we think that they may be white collar (office workers) or do we perceive them to be higher up the social scale and hold some sort of managerial post.

When I study someone's face one of the things that I always notice is the condition of the persons teeth (maybe this is something peculiar to me but I think you can learn a lot by looking at the condition of a person's teeth. I notice whether their teeth are straight or crooked, whether there are teeth missing and mainly whether or not the individuals teeth are clean or stained.

The condition of a person's teeth can in fact have a huge impact on various aspects of that person's life. Some that they will be aware of and some that they will be ignorant about.

Firstly the appearance of your teeth plays a significant part in your overall self confidence and self esteem. People with teeth in poor condition are far less likely to smile openly for example if they are aware of dental shortcomings as they become self conscious about the problem. They tend to smile with their mouths closed in order not to expose their teeth and draw attention to the problem.

This lack of self confidence can have far reaching consequences in all sorts of areas of that persons life.

From a social point of view it can have repercussions with regard to how you interact with friends and acquaintances and more particularly with strangers also on how you react in the company of the opposite sex.

If you are conscious of a personal defect you invariably believe that other others will also and in some way judge you on that defect.

From the point of view of your career poorly presented teeth can certainly be a disadvantage. This is obviously not the case in every type of job but is certainly true if you have a job that requires you to come into contact with people on a regular basis (sales for example). Customers and clients react far better to people who are well groomed and do not display signs that they are neglecting their personal hygiene.

If you have missing teeth or have teeth that crooked or bent it is most probably nothing to do with personal hygiene but purely an accident of nature and if this is the case you will probably have little choice but to visit your dentist to get the problem sorted.

If on the other hand you simply have teeth that are discoloured, stained or dirty it is more likely that this is caused by neglect in some way. Fortunately there are numerous ways in which you can treat the problem.

You can always have your dentist or dental surgeon treat the problem for you but this will almost certainly involve you in making multiple visits to his, or her, surgery and will also involve a reasonably high degree of cost which will of course be governed by the type of treatment that your dentist recommends and ultimately undertakes.

As an alternative to visiting your dentist if you merely have stained teeth and want to remove the staining yourself there are a number of teeth whitening kits for home use that are available.

These kits come with full instructions and are safe and easy to use and can be used as a one time treatment to remove existing stains or can be used on a regular basis to help maintain your teeth in a white and bright state.

You will find that if you do make the effort to make your teeth more presentable the knock on effects of increased self confidence and self esteem will have a positive impact on your life in general and will possibly improve your well being and general health.
