If you currently have indoor ceiling fans, do they have Energy Star certification? The fans that have been accredited with Energy Star have an increased efficiency by 50% of those that don't have it. The blade designs and motors are what make the difference. You will save even more if the fan has an Energy Star light kit, as you won't need the change the bulbs as often.

Manufacturers have made it an objective to increase the efficiency of ceiling fans by improving lighting, motor, and blade technology to meet consumer demand. The newer fans that use the most up-to-date technology are said to have increased their efficiency by as much as 75% over previous models.

Ceiling fans do not help cool air, so the only time they should be on is when you are in the room during the day and sleeping at night. Not using the AC so much and wisely using fans can really cut down your energy expenses. The more you have in your house, the better, because of their ability to circulate air. Just about any room can accommodate a ceiling fan, including family rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and even bathrooms. They also can be used for outdoor patios. They are showing up more and more in garages and offices as well.

The size should not be overlooked. Larger fans are becoming more popular, ones with 52, 60, and even 72 inch blade spans, especially in spacious rooms. The smaller ones are being used more nowadays in walk-in closets and hallways. For rooms that are less than 200 square feet, the blade sweep ideally should be between 36 and 52 inches in diameter as a rule of thumb. For rooms larger than this, 52 inch fans on up are recommended. If it's larger than 400 square feet, then you will have to get at least two ceiling fans.

The number of blades varies, as some have as many as six. This number however has very little effect on airflow and is primarily a matter of preference. What does affect airflow is blade pitch, motor size, and diameter.
