I the main problem is that people worry too much about what people think about them. This is actually a common problem but it is no way to live your life. If your always worrying about what other people think about you then you are just supressing yourself. I'm sure your not even your true self around other people. Most people arn't but it seems you have it worse than others.
Don't worry though because you can fix this. You just need to improve your self worth and raise your self esteem. You also need to become more outgoing and start talking to people more. If your shy you need to step outside of your comfort zone and just start meeting more people. I would make it a goal to talk to around say 3 new people every day even if you do not feel like it.
If you want to become more confident and start making more friends look at it like a numbers game. The more people you talk to the more people you will meet. Rejection is a fear to many people but if you learn to accept it you will actually become stronger. Because I will go ahead and tell you that rejection is always around because people are busy or simply just don't care to make any new friends right now.
You need to accept yourself for the person that you are and realize that you are great! You got to love yourself to have high self confidence in the first place! Then and only then will you start to see your self esteem levels going up! It takes time to get there but there is a lot you can do. It's a gradual process but it's worth the journey!
