Install A Garage Door Yourself Without Paying A Professional

No, installing a garage door yourself won't be the easiest of tasks

, but it can be done. With a little help from a trusted friend (garage doors can be quite heavy), you can remove and install a new door without having to pay a professional.

The level of difficulty depends on your existing door, the new one you've purchased, and how well you can read and adhere to instructions. Before diving in, here are some things you need to know before installing a garage door on your own.

Torsion Springs

This is the most challenging and dangerous part of replacing an old garage door. In general, it is wise to leave removing old torsion springs to professionals or at the very least a seasoned handyman friend. If you insist on doing it yourself, you have to have help. It is not possible to do it alone without risking your safety. It is quite easy for these to be mishandled, resulting in painful injuries.

Installing the torsion springs can be equally as tricky, so when choosing a new garage door kit, look for one that isn't too complex and following the instructions carefully. If you become too frustrated, call in the professionals.

Repair the Frame

After removing your old entrance, you'll want to check the frame and make any necessary repairs. Look for splintered wood, rotted areas, water damage, or any warping that may have occurred over the years. If the frame appears extremely damaged, this may have to be replaced as well. The frame serves as the foundation for your garage door, so it's important that it is in good condition.

Assemble the Tracks

Unless you are installing a side-hinged garage door, you'll like have to assemble the tracks that allow the door to fold up into the ceiling. First, check to make sure you have all the parts included in the kit and all of the proper tools that are necessary for the project. You'll then want to follow the instructions carefully and put together the tracks.

Brackets and Rollers

The next step in installing a garage door is placing all of the brackets and rollers on the frame. These will hold the tracks in place. Make sure they are mounted correctly and securely so the tracks don't slip or move out of place.

Track Hanger

Once the brackets and rollers are in place, you'll have to install the track hanger on the ceiling in order to complete the process. The tracks may then be completely threaded through in order for the sections to hang properly.

There are many different types of garage gates and manufacturers, so installation may vary greatly between models. Be prepared for some heavy lifting and wear appropriate safety gear. Although not an impossible task, installing a new garage entrance is not for the inexperienced. It isn't the best first do-it-yourself project to attempt to tackle.
