Internet Marketing Tips - Time to Come Down From Your Ivory Tower
I really needed to compose myself before writing this article because this is something
that has been bugging me for a long time, but today, thanks to yet another Warrior Forum thread, I finally decided that it was time that I opened up my big mouth and tell everybody what I think of this arrogance. And yes, it is just that...even though I was very respectful with my thread response. Okay, what am I talking about? Keep reading and you'll find out.
There are a number of marketers out there who have been doing this a lot longer than myself (7 plus years as of this writing) who seem to feel that because something is not new and wonderful to them, it is of absolutely NO use to anybody else and therefore, should NOT be promoted as some great thing. Well, I have just one thing to say to these people.
It's time to come down from your ivory tower folks because your poop stinks just like everybody else's.
A little over 7 years ago I had lost my job and needed to find some way of making a living. So I turned to the Internet. I can honestly say that I knew NOTHING at the time. Now, somebody who was already marketing since, oh say 1997, knew a lot more than me. And if I had seen a sales page that said, "Amazing Secret That...Whatever," I would have probably not only believed it but actually got some value out of the product, even if it was something that a seasoned vet already knew.
Why is it that once these people get an education and achieve some success, maybe even a lot of success, that they think that the only thing worth promoting has to be some holy grail of Internet marketing? In fact, I wonder if they believe that any such thing even exists? The way they talk, EVERYTHING is common knowledge and NOTHING is new. Well, guess what? Maybe nothing IS new. But to some poor schnook out there who is just trying to make heads or tails of all this, EVERYTHING could very well be new.
This is one of the first things I've learned since marketing online. There is a market for every skill level.
Now, having said that...and this is where I draw the line...to make statements like, "I guarantee this is something you've never seen before" is arrogant on the other extreme. It assumes that this thing that you know, whatever it is, is known ONLY by you. Now THAT is arrogance at its highest level. Okay, I hate pure hype like that. I'd much prefer the marketer said something like, "This MAY be something you don't know." Not only is that more believable, but it has a better chance of being true.
But you pro marketers (you know who you are), it's time to come down from your ivory tower because not everybody out there is a seasoned pro like you are.
And that's saying it as nicely as I can.
To YOUR Success,
S
