Japans premium car maker Lexus has been producing the GS model since 1991; it is a mid-size luxury premium car

. The GS competes in a very saturated market where marques like BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz dominate. Lexus is the only Japanese premium car maker, but there is a new kid on the block, the new Infiniti brand from Nissan.

The current model of the GS is the third generation model it has been with us since 2006. The third generation of the GS was the first Lexus model to feature the marque's new L-finesse design philosophy. Characterized by swooping lines, a fastback profile, and more muscular styling, the GS indicated the future direction of the Lexus line-up.

As you would expect from a Lexus the GS comes with lots of toys and gadgets as standard. On the inside each GS model comes with water repellent front door glass, an acoustic windshield, solar energy absorbing glass, electro chromic auto-dimming side mirrors with puddle lamps, electro chromic auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 10-way driver and front passenger power and heated seats with three-position Lexus Memory System, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and a power boot closer.

The fourth generation GS model has now been announced, the new Lexus is due to arrive at dealerships later this year with a starting price of around 32k. I like the LED powered headlights and daylight running lights. I also like the fact that the door handles are sealed into the door panel and could be pushed to open out.

Standard equipment on the GS range is made up of 17-inch alloys, bi-xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights and a rear-view camera. Also on the list are heated leather seats, climate control, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and DAB.

If that is not enough kit then the Luxury trim comes with the additional 18-inch alloys, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitor and sat-nav. F Sport models get larger 19-inch wheels, plus a boot spoiler and more aggressive bumper design. Inside, F Sport cars also add a perforated leather sports steering wheel and gear knob, sports pedals and four-way lumbar support
