Iron County Attractions

There are many beautiful and unique attractions in Iron County

, Michigan, each with its own character and charm. Take a visit and experience the serene nature of northern Michigan for yourself.

One of the first things you should go see is the Iron County Courthouse in Crystal Falls, Michigan. The massive building looks more like a castle, and the architecture on the inside is even more exquisite than the detailed exterior.

The Courthouse was named a national landmark in February of 1975. The building overlooks the valley to Crystal Falls and Iron Mountain. There are currently several fund raising efforts for future renovations and repairs that need to be taken care of in the Courthouse.

The Paint River Boardwalk is located in the western part of Iron County on the Paint River. The river runs south east into the Brule River, which joins the Michigamme River to from the Menominee River.


The river bed consists of gravel, sand, and rock and contains trout and smallmouth bass. The Paint River Boardwalk is a very popular fishing hole for the locals, who enjoy fly fishing or sitting on the edge of the dock.

The Paint River Boardwalk is located on the east side of Paint River, and provides a wonderful place to take a stroll next to the calmly flowing river. Informational kiosks also provide an educational experience for visitors.

The Iron County Historical Museum is in upper Michigan in Caspian, Michigan. This is the largest outdoor museum in upper Michigan, and features twenty-three buildings. The many building include the Cultural Center, Research Center, the Lee LeBlanc Wildlife Art Gallery, Giovanelli Italianati Art Gallery, and the Bernhardt Contemporary Art gallery.

The Giovanelli Italianati Art Gallery was founded by Brandon Giovanelli. He taught art at Iron River High School and also Gogebic College after getting his graduate degree from Northern Michigan University.

He transformed his parent's home into a gallery that displayed the variety of his artistic work from Renaissance style to contemporary art and built his studio over the garage. The home and studio were moved to the Museum grounds in 1999 as a gift from his family.

The Bernhardt Contemporary Art gallery is in St. Mary's Church, which was built in 1911 in Gaastra. The Church was moved to the Museum ground in 1989 and displays a collection of 20th century American, Canadian, and Japanese artists.

There is also a display of work from local artists. The museum includes contemporary original oil, pastels, water colors, silk screens, lithographs, and woodcut printouts. Most of the work in the Bernhardt Contemporary Art gallery is nationally recognized.

The outdoor complexes of the museum include The Homestead, which is a cluster of six 1890-1900 log cabins that depicts early pioneer life. The Lumbercamp has four log buildings, sleighs, and big wheels that haul logs from the forest to the camp.

The Mining area displays a replica of an underground drift and underground equipment for mining and lifting ore from the ground. The Transportation are consists of an 1890 depot, a car barn with a 1911 street car, a crossing house, and a collection of early shops.

The Victorian Area includes the home of internationally renowned composer Carrie Jacobs Bond, which was build in 1890. The Area also includes a one-room school house, which is furnished.

The Harbor House Museum in Crystal Falls, Michigan is an interactive display of the Harbour family home built in 1900. The home was built by Fred Floodstand for the Harbour family. The home is constructed on cement blocks and designed in the steamboat style of architecture, and features twin wraparound porches.


The Split Rock is where a seedling pine grew into the crevice of a boulder, and eventually split the rock in two. The tree is now dead, but you can see another little seedling budding into another crevice.

The First Roadside Park was established in 1919, and is the first of its kind in the state of Michigan. The park is a resting area for motorists, and is a great place to take a stroll or let the kids run around.

The Iron County Waterfalls is a natural attraction in Iron County, which provides hiking a the beautiful scenery of Bond Falls, Agate Falls, Canyon falls, and Horserace Rapids.
