Is A Used Car A Better Purchase Than A New Car?

Even though prices have dropped slightly, buying a car is still a huge undertaking

not just in terms of purchasing the car itself but also in the cost of keeping it on the road year after year. But, a car fulfils so many functions these days. It not only offers a safe and secure means of personal transport but it also represents an extension of your personality, whether that's intentional or not.

However, you don't necessarily need to buy a brand new car to feel secure, or have that status symbol you've always wanted. Buying a used car can still be a special event and a used car often has many advantages over buying a new car anyway. And don't forget that some select second hand cars are even more desirable than a new one, particularly the old classic models like Jaguars and Mercedes cars which can command a high price tag to collectors in the industry.

There are definitely some benefits to buying a used car, particularly of course the price. Most second hand cars are cheaper than their newer versions (unless they've been modified in some way) and a lower cost gives the buyer a lot more choice to opt for a slightly higher spec model of car.

Another great benefit of buying a second hand car rather than a brand new one is the issue of depreciation. The price of a new car will depreciate by 20% even before it's driven off the garage forecourt. There may be some exceptions to this rule but it's a well known fact to those in the know.

There is an extensive range of cars which can be chosen from when being used. The second hand car market is not limited to waiting times or hidden extras to add to the car. When you buy a used car you buy what you can see. It will will come with a history and if you are buying from a reputable source you will have access to that history. This will be apparent in the form of a log book, repair history, or tell tale signs on the inside or the outside of the car.
