Is Obesity Caused By Fatheadedness?

At first an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in women was attributed to sitting for long periods of time

. Prolonged sitting caused increased insulin resistance and chronic inflammation. Although no such link was found in men, even women who engaged in vigorous physical activity were at risk if sedentary for prolonged periods. However, when body mass index - a height to weight ratio - was factored in, obesity was seen as part of the link. Hormones released from fat tissue can be detrimental to the body's metabolism. It seems obesity doesn't "sit well" when it comes to women and diabetes.

Obese mothers have an increased risk of having children with autism. A study published in the journal Pediatrics looked at approximately 1,000 mothers. Half had an autistic child and the other half had a child with a developmental delay or no developmental problems. If the mothers had been obese, diabetic or had high blood pressure during pregnancy, there was a 60% increased risk of autism. However, obesity was the most common risk factor, affecting more than 20% of mothers with autistic children. Considering 33% of child-bearing-age women are obese in 2012, they literally need to "reduce" the risk to their children.

Two childhood obesity genes have been identified. Researchers in a study published in Nature Genetics looked at 14 studies that included 5,500 obese children and 8,300 normal-weight children. By genotyping DNA from the obese children, 2 genes were found that had never been related to obesity because in adults the same genes have a much weaker impact. According to WebMD, one of the genes increases childhood obesity risk 22% and the other increases it 14%. However, children with a genetic predisposition aren't destined to become obese adults - not if they are "parentally destined" to eat healthfully and exercise.

Many doctors and health officials think sodas and other sugary beverages should be public enemy #1 in the fight against obesity. According to the Department of Agriculture, about 25% of Americans get at least 200 calories daily from sugary drinks. For example, a 20-ounce soda contains 227 calories, which equals more than 10% of the total calories an adult woman needs to maintain a healthy weight. Overall, natural sugar and high fructose corn syrup make up about one-sixth of all calories consumed - with more than one-third of those calories coming from sugary beverages. Maybe diet beverages should be considered "sweet nothings".
