Is Your Air Conditioning System Ready For The Summer?

It's human nature to not deal with something until it becomes a problem

. But that's one attitude you don't want to take when it comes to getting needed air conditioning service.

Where I live, in northern Colorado, the first hot day of the year tends to sneak up us. We've been known to have late spring snow storms in May which fools us into believing we're a long time from reaching summer.

And then, Bam! Before we know what hits us, two or three hot days in early in June brings us to the realization that we better start getting prepared for the summer months.

Unfortunately for those who wait too long to begin the necessary preparations, they are now in line with the thousands of other procrastinators.

That's typically what happens to many people with taking care of things around the home. Whether it's getting the furnace serviced for winter, getting an underground sprinkler ready for the warm weather season, or getting the air conditioning system ready a hot summer, you definitely want to stay ahead of the crowd.

When those first few hot days hit, heating and air conditioning companies are usually swamped with putting in new a/c systems and servicing existing ones. For example Fort Collins, Colorado air comditioning service companies encourage customers to begin booking a/c service once the temperature begins to consistently reach into the 70's.

In Northern Colorado that's usually towards the end of April. Depedning on where you live it might be a little earlier or later.

Here's some information you need to be aware of concerning service:

- An air conditioner is a very tough piece of equipment. It's designed to withstand all sorts of abuse and keep working. Because of that, it can lead to people forgetting about regular upkeep and maintenance.

- Without regular maintenance an air conditioner loses about 5% of its original efficiency for each year of operation. With regular tune-ups, a unit will typically maintain up to 95% of its original efficiency.

- A properly serviced air conditioner will also do a better job of dehumidifying your home.

A service check should include: cleaning the condensing unit coils, checking the amp draw of the compressor, checking that belts are well adjusted, oiling the fan motors, checking the system operating pressures and temperatures against the manufacturers specifications, and last but not least, check the coolant level (Freon).

A system can cost 20% more to operate if it's only 10% low on Freon. It is recommended the coolant level be checked each year.

By taking care of these things each year, the cost of an annual tune-up is made up quickly in savings on your monthly electric bill and reduced repair costs.

Many Fort Collins air conditioning service companies, and others around the country, offer special early bird prices this time of year. So beat the rush. Do not procrastinate and call your local air conditioning company soon.
