Isochronic Tones - The Ultimate Brainwave Entrainment Technique?

Isochronic tones are the most sophisticated method yet devised to enable ordinary people to control their own brainwaves

. For those of us who cannot spare the time to study advanced meditation techniques, or who cannot afford to set up expensive in-home biofeedback equipment, listening to recordings of isochronic tones offers the cheapest and easiest route to brainwave entrainment.

Many people are familiar by now with the basic concept of how external stimuli, whether sound or light, can induce a frequency-following response in the brain. This phenomenon can be exploited to our advantage, using sounds of particular frequencies to induce desired brainwave patterns. For example, someone having trouble sleeping might benefit greatly from inducing the delta brainwaves associated with deep, dreamless, and restorative sleep.

But what is the best technique for entrainment? Up to now, binaural beats have been the most widely used technology, and many online vendors of binaural beats MP3s have sprung up on the web. (Not all of these really know what they're doing, but that's another story!) Yet even the 1973 article in Scientific American that brought binaural beats to prominence acknowledged that their effectiveness is questionable. The author of that article, Dr. Gerald Oster, found binaural beats to be as perceptible as 1/10th of a whisper - essentially subliminal. This makes them easy to blend with pleasing relaxation music, but is not a recipe for powerful entrainment sessions.

THE ISOCHRONIC TONE ADVANTAGE

Whereas binaural beats require the brain to interpret two independent frequencies presented to the left and right ears through headphones, isochronic tones do not "ask" the brain to figure anything out and can be listened to without headphones if the user prefers. Isochronic tones are very well-defined, carefully spaced pulses of sound targeting the exact frequency desired for entrainment. They evoke a profound cortical response and can achieve the intended result much more quickly and deeply than binaural beats ever could.

Possible Disadvantages

For some users, isochronic tones may simply be too powerful, leading to headaches. A period of gradual acclimatization may be necessary. The larger issue is that the very sharpness of the tones makes them harder to incorporate into the kinds of music soundtracks with which binaural beats users are familiar. A session with isochronic tones is a more serious meditation session - a session with a purpose. It is for people who know exactly where they want to go, mentally or spiritually, and are determined to get there in the most effective way. Isochronic tones are a tool; they are not elevator music!
