It's Called Leadership… Not LeaderSHIT

FACT: Most people are not raised to be leaders

.

Most people never think about leadership, what it is, what it takes or the effects of great, solid leadership. Many times we don't even realize that we are leading when we are doing it every day. But it is important to remember that the impact of what we say and of what we do has massive consequences.

We start thinking about leadership and our development as a leader when it is, for whatever reason, suddenly thrust upon us. We start really thinking about it when we are given a position of responsibility and leadership, whether it's at church, school, local government, parenthood, etc.

WHAM! All of a sudden we have a great need to actually rise to the occasion and BE a leader. People are watching and listening. We don't have time to develop the skill and the mindset of a leader. That takes years and years of intense study and quiet, diligent emulation of other great leaders. It takes some heavy inspiration to know what to do in those moments when there is no guidebook or rules to govern our actions. This is what I call "The Insight of Solomon" (a play on the word "In-Sight" sight from within you, happens automatically all of the time, it is not thought about or deliberated).

But how do you gain it? How do you transform your unprepared self into a powerful, dynamic, compassionate, wise and effective leader and how do you do it RIGHT NOW?

Well, here's the answer you can. Let me repeat that: you can. And that's because that amazing leader already exists and always has. It's just been lying dormant inside you waiting for the opportunity to be called up to the plate. This program can help you get that inner leader to emerge and it can do it instantly.

The problem is that when we come to a point in our lives when we are faced with what many organizations have (created to appeal to our inner egos and) falsely titled a "Leadership Opportunity" with a "Leadership Position" within the organization, we have all kinds of approaches. We might read books, take seminars, attend a course, hire a consultant or life coach, or use whatever tools are available.

The problem with these efforts is that the information, whether new or re-interpreted, is generally put into the marketplace by individuals (remember my term, paper gurus) who ARE NOT LEADERS.

This misinformation dangled in front of and then poured into the minds of hungry would-be-leaders turns out anything and everything everything except true leaders.

The results resemble more of what I call "Leadershit."

Vulgar? Maybe. But more vulgar are the end results of this poor attempt to teach leadership.

My feeling is that when someone who has not studied leadership is thrust into a so-called leadership position and suddenly required to reach in to his or her memory banks and find leadership philosophy and use their current experience to make the distinctions necessary to apply it well, I find that almost always the wrong interpretations are implemented. And thus the end result CRAP. (In my book "Leadership Not Leadershit" I describe in greater detail the real difference between Leadership and Management.)

When you have this circumstance just dropped in your lap, you do not have the time to delve into or study the philosophies of leadership. We all know that it takes time to gain real wisdom.

You have a need for deft dealings and sagely striving right now. There's no time BECOME a leader. You need to BE a leader today now immediately.

In my many years of leadership and developing leaders of all different ages and in all types of organizations, I have found the best way to develop leadership fast is to list the TOP attributes of great leaders and then have someone gauge where they are as it relates to those attributes. Then the job is to go to work adjusting our approaches while continuing to measure our level of performance against the masters.

I remember something that Anthony Robbins once said that stuck with me since I was 21 years of age. He said that "Motion Dictates Emotion."

For example: It's hard to feel sad when you smile.

In the case of leadership, motion will dictate emotion. Or, actions will dictate thought processes. By correcting your actions in comparison to a list of firm attributes, you will more quickly gain access to wisdom. Much of the distinction-making process is inherent in the attributes. We essentially pass through time and space and save time.

Here is a list of 129 Leadership Attributes that I have assembled throughout the years. Use the L.E.V.E.L. acronym in the G.R.O.W. worksheet (found in this curriculum) to see how you measure up on each of these attributes. Then, go about correcting them while using the same L.E.V.E.L. approach to continually improve your position and immediately watch your leadership ability grow.

After taking this 139-point evaluation, if you discover that you have personal business-related stories that apply to any of the points and if you wish to write about those experiences and then submit them to me, I will publish them in my new book. I will not only give you credit, but I'll also list you as a co-author (contributing author) of the book. Trust me, professionally, this is great credibility for you.

The experience you write about can be about something that you did or something that someone did for you. Either way I would appreciate reading about your experiences. This approach of mine keeps my material fresh and wholly relevant to my marketplace.
