Just What Is The Diaphragm, And What Does It Have To Do With Singing?

Share: Students have arrived at my studio over the years
, asking to be taught "diaphragmatic breathing," as if thats some sort of secret process only taught by voice teachers. The truth is that everybody breathes with the diaphragm. This is how the human body inhales air.
The diaphragm is a large muscular piece in the middle of the body, separating the heart-lung area from the stomach-intestinal area. It is attached completely around the body, and sits under the heart and lungs. Its main job is to drop down in its center, creating a vacuum which "sucks" the lungs down and open. We call this inhaling, and the diaphragm is integral to this process. So you can see that everybody breathes using their diaphragm. (Diaphragmatic breathing)
Now that the "Mister Science" part of this is over let's look at how you can train your body and your diaphragm to take in more air during inhalation. (An obvious value to the singer)
Simply put, our diaphragm is triggered to stop its downward move when we raise our shoulders and ribcage during inhalation. (There's a lot involved here, but this explanation is fine for our use.) So, if the diaphragm can't lower itself completely the lungs can't open completely to take in the most air. The "air-balloons" are smaller.

Share: The problem is that, although we all were born breathing correctly (not by just raising the chest), over time we learn, through imitation to breathe like Mom and Dad by raising the chest and shoulders, rather than just letting our little bellies expand. (Watch a baby breathe)
Most of us inhale incorrectly, contrary to what nature intended, for all of our lives.
What to do? Learn to breathe "into the belly" expanding in the middle, all around the body, including the back. When we feel a little fat as we inhale, we are doing things right.
Since we "learned" to breathe incorrectly, we need to "learn" to breathe correctly. Fortunately our bodies know the right process so it's just a matter or reminding it. When we sleep we go back to breathing "at the belly", so we're getting some serious practice 8 hours a day...oops, I forgot we're musicians. Let's make that 3 hours of sleep.
Once a day, lie on the floor on your back, laying your hand across your navel. Then breathe deeply 7 times. Because you are acquired to the hard floor you will have to breathe correctly. Your shoulder and ribcage can' move up and down.
Once you've inhaled and exhaled 7 times, feeling your belly expand, stand up and try it 7 times. This will be more difficult, and you will probably go back to the old way. But if you keep trying (7 times on the floor - 7 times standing) each day for about 5 minutes, changes will occur and you will change your inhalation style to expanded belly (all the way around the body) from raised shoulder and ribs.
