Kenya Promises to Address E-waste Challenges

Irresponsible disposal of obsolete electronic components has confined the entire country in a room literally waiting to be destroyed

. It's been over a decade since Kenya became the final destination of electronic waste coming from different parts of the world. Yet, there is neither any safety disposal regulatory nor any legislation enacted against environmental hazards.

Increasing demand of electronic equipments in Kenya as well as other neighboring countries such as Tanzania, Sudan, Zambia, Nigeria, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Congo has created severe environmental issues. Growing contamination of soil water and air has put millions of lives on the edge. According to the UN report, it is already too late and the situation requires immediate national as well as international attention; otherwise, as most of the environmentalists say, "It would be possibly impossible to repay the penalty."

In recent years, Kenya has experienced some extreme environmental damages and serious health issues such as cancer, lupus, immune diseases, allergies, and asthma. Some environmentalists have even warned against its far reaching impact on Kenyan wild life. In the year 2008, in the wake of international pressure, Kenyan government has adhered to implementing some effective guidelines for e-waste management; but on the ground, nothing seems to be working.

According to The United Nations Environment Programme, "Every year, up to 50 million tons of electronic waste is generated across the world; out of which, about 1.5 million tons of e-waste reaches Kenya." There are thousands of small scale traders involved in the processing of electronic waste. Almost all of them employ women and children and are not even aware of the hazards that come along with electronic devices. Moreover, a number of e-waste traders are located beside the rivers and lakes; they burn, wash and destroy electronic components in the open. It's high time the Kenyan government and the international community worked shoulder to shoulder. E-waste in Kenya has already put millions of people's life at stake. Any delay will further aggravate the situation.

There is no doubt that various electronic devices have tremendously helped us improve our lifestyle; its blessings cannot be denied. On the other hand, rapid technological developments have resulted into increased pace obsolescent. If practical actions and preventive measures are not implemented at the soonest, the whole world will be buried underneath the mountains of electronic waste.

Personal Computers and other technological equipments contain several dangerous substances that cripple the lungs and increase the risk of skin cancer. The Cathode Ray tubes CRTs contain highly toxic and hazardous element such as lead oxide and need to be handled with special concern.

Recycling is the appropriate alternative for waste disposal to minimize the impact of hazardous substances on global environment. Moreover, it can transform obsolete components into your asset. Users can contribute nurturing a healthy green earth by refurbishing their outdated electronic equipments.
