Kill The Bitterness That Streams From Self-righteousness
, Christ Is The End Of The Law
Self-righteousness leads to pride, arrogance, and a deep underlying bitterness. You see: if Christ is indeed the end of the law, then those who struggle to add to His works will always fail. Thus they end up boasting of false victories, and they become resentful, angry, and hostile toward those who have learned to walk in grace.
Even unbelievers can spot "grace killers" from miles away. This is because these people are always carting around a list of rules, regulations, and bible quotes that, in their mind, define what one must do to be Christian. They fear grace, despising those who have it, and not understand the power that comes from it. Just as a wild dog, due to mistrust of the unknown, sulks near the edges of a campfire where there is a loving hand and free meat, grace killers endure loneliness, bitterness, and an ever-growing spiritual hunger.
Grace killers are people that the bible identifies as zealous for God but not according to knowledge. The Holy Spirit records that they are "ignorant of God's righteousness, always going around trying to establish their own righteousness." This is because they refuse to submit to the righteousness that comes from God.
They are proud, always spouting out verse after verse of law and commandment, even as though they, in this fleshly body, are standing righteous before a holy God by their personal obedience to these legal requirements. And they are miserable in this foolishness, for scripture declares "Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth," (Romans 10:4). Their method will never succeed.
Israel misunderstood the intention of the law. They failed to grasp their own shortcoming. The law pointed to the righteousness that may only be attained by faith in Jesus Christ. They could not comprehend the simple truth of the matter: under the law they were ever condemned as sinners, for it is only by responding to God's revelation of Himself through the law that any man can come into the gift of righteousness. Thus they attach their hopes to their own worthless religious achievements.
Then, and even now, men substitute works for faith. Rather than seeking redemption in God's great and wonderful gifts of mercy and grace, they come bound in legal chains, bitter and angry that God will not accept their feeble offerings. They will not take God at His word.
They speak the name of Jesus, but they leave Him on the cross and then they seek to bind others so that they may not find the freedom that exists in the faith that springs from the heart. They forget that the cross was taken down, that Jesus was buried, and that, on the third day as the scriptures have recorded it, He rose again to be our Deliver, our Savior, our Righteousness.
It is not by law that you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, nor by good works. The bible is clear: if you live by the law, the law will judge you. This does not reject the law that is written into the heart of God's children, it merely rejects the grace killers that use the bible as a personal hammer. Jesus is not on the cross. He is in heaven, on the right hand of God the Father, having forever opened the doors to righteousness. He gives free access to any who will come by faith alone.
"For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness," (Romans 10:10).
Why, oh Grace Killer, do you lie to the Holy Spirit of God? Are you truly blinded to your own sinful ways? Learn to do justly, love mercy, and walk "humbly" with your God. Can you not understand the power of grace? It is not a doorway into sin, it is the only way out of sin.
Casting off Religious Demands
Perhaps you wonder why I have so often paraphrased verses rather than using direct quotes. I seek to win men to God through the perfect knowledge of Jesus Christ, not through a selected manner of relaying words. Some article submission sites do not accept articles that are loaded down with quotes. So it is not about King James, or the New American Standard, or ownership of scriptures. It is about spreading God's truth to as many as will hear.
Lay aside religion. Surrender your self-righteous efforts. Trust in the love and the promises of Jesus Christ. To the living, He stands as a willing lawyer for any who will believe in His finished works. If you die without knowing grace, you will one day rise before The White Throne of Judgment, and then, He who would have been your lawyer will then be your judge.
As James Kennedy sometimes says, "there is an everlasting too late'".
