Killing Bed Bugs in Inner City Areas

Bed bugs are small insects that are about the size of a lady bug

. Getting rid of bed bugs is a huge problem that occurs many times in Inner City areas which are crowded in space. Bed bugs are nocturnal creatures which means they come out and feed at nighttime, typically these bugs will suck human blood at night and go back to hiding by morning. These bugs are attracted by humans body heat and the carbon dioxide when we breath, they usually end up feasting on areas such as the shoulders and arms.

During feeding, the bedbug's proboscis penetrates our skin, which injects a saliva which numbs the skin while the bed bug sucks out blood. Usually they will feed on the blood between 7-10 minutes at a time, as the bed bugs fill with blood their color changes from light brown to reddish.

Bed bugs like to hide in crevices, cracks, clothing, mattress's, chairs and bed headboards. This is the easiest of places for them to hide as they can quickly access food. By living in places close to the human host they do not have to go far for their next meal, it is like sleeping next to the fridge for them. Other places they like dwelling are in floorboards, wall cracks, carpeting, furniture, bed frames and behind peeling paint and wallpaper.

Over the last couple of years, Public Health Units have received an increase in calls regarding bed bugs. It is possible for anyone regardless of cleanliness to become infested with bed bugs. Bed bugs are small biting insects that multiply quickly and spread easily. An infestation can cause anxiety and a feeling of shame. They can also cause secondary skin infections, allergic reactions and financial hardship.
