If you are comfortable reading aloud, then go ahead and read them audibly. When ever you come across a word that you don't know, pause a bit, read the sentence containing the word two or three times first. Then look for the meaning of the word in the dictionary along with the different usages.

Note them down in a paper; there would be sentences with that word in the dictionary. Learn them by analyzing the sentence structure. Now that you know the word, make your own sentences. Next, you need to make sure that these sentences are correct.

In this way, that word will remain fresh in your memory. Make this a daily activity. Within a few days, you would be able to advance to other books.

Keep the collected and learned information in one place and have a look at them once-in-a-while.

Always remember to learn the various usages of a word, instead of just learning its meaning.

An important factor here is the use of the right dictionary. Always buy an updated dictionary since old dictionaries may contain words that no longer exist.

Make it a point to read a newspaper along with reading books, because newspapers would make you familiar with more words used in day-to-day conversation.
