Laid Back Goa

Goa is one of the most visited beach destinations in the world best known for its

laid back atmosphere, mouth watering seafood and of course, the lovely beaches. Goa gets most of its earnings from its tourism industry. Apart from beaches, you will see paddy fields and coconut trees, all of which offer a very fresh picture to the mind. Probably that is why this region is so popular among beach lovers. Goas culture and traditions are very different from that in other parts of the country. This is because Goa was at one point of time in history under the control of the Portuguese Empire. Although the Portuguese people left after 450 years of ruling, the traces of their culture and behavior had been absorbed in Goas soul by then. The Portuguese later gave this region to the British Empire as a gift. It had remained under the British until the country attained independence.

Goa is a small place, in fact the smallest state of India located on the western part of the country. Its a coastal region with the Arabian Sea lying to its west. Some regions of Karnataka borders Goa to its east and south with some regions of Maharashtra lie to its north. Coastal regions of Goa and its neighbouring states are part of a wider culture distinct form that of the rest of India. This culture is called the Konkan culture. A Portuguese touch can be seen in the taste of its food and the construction pattern of its buildings and churches. Old Goa was previously the capital of Goa but since an epidemic had struck the region which was a prolonged one, the capital was shifted to Panaji. Panaji and other Goan towns such as Margao etc show significant influence of the Portuguese culture. The town of Ponda is popular for its numerous Hindu temples which had been built at various points of time between 15th and 18th centuries. Old Goa is popular for its cathedrals. Around 29 kilometers away from the capital lies Goas airport which is in a region called Dabolim. Because of its coastal location, Goa remains humid for the maximum portion of the year. But months of November, December, January and February are relatively pleasant.

St Francis Xavier was buried in Old Goa and therefore is of great importance to Catholic Christians throughout the globe. Xavier Feast is celebrated very splendidly in Goa, apart from the New Year and Christmas celebrations for which Goa is best known. Goa has a number of hotels ranging from cost effective to expensive and luxurious ones. By population, the state of Goa is the fourth smallest in India which makes it the perfect place to visit for a peaceful vacation.
