Leadership Development A Way Of Life Lesson1

Recently I was conducting leadership skills for managers training when one of the participants

, at the end of the program, asked for some time to speak to me privately. This gentleman was one of the brightest in a group of 75 managers. His contributions were always valuable and his attitude was admirable. Indeed I was quietly curious about this man, about the circumstances that has caused him to develop such a high level of empathy and compassion. So I was delighted that he wanted to spend time with me.

It was a Leadership Development Program that focused primarily on Personal Enhancement. He felt that the learning was very apt for his life. He went on to share his life circumstances. He has only one son and this child was born stone deaf which lead him to be mute. It took him 6 months to overcome the disappointment but he woke up one morning with the resolution that he was not going allow his sons life to be mediocre because of this challenge. So he and his wife brought him up like they would a child with all faculties and he excelled in school and in sports. His eyes were the windows to his soul and he enjoyed life with a careless abandon. He was now 11 years old.

Then the unbelievable happened! Three months ago he woke up with a severe headache and the parents rushed him to the doctor only to be told the unthinkable, "Your son has the Helen Kellers disease and will be blind in 2 months." The parents did not know how they could break the news to their son. The father went into a deep depression and stalled to tell the child. But soon the son realized it himself and came to his father one day, sat on his lap, hugged him and said, "Dad, I know that your eyes will help me to see the world better than mine."

The father broke down uncontrollably when he told me this story. The only question he asked me was, "Am I competent enough to be his eyes?" To me the question translated to, "Do I have what it takes to help my son through his terrible circumstances?"

Leadership development is about having the courage to examine your capabilities and pushing yourself to higher levels. It is about a process of continuous self-development. It is about being vulnerable and humble. And, finally, it is about the courage and persistence to climb the mountains of life, however high they may be. Our Executive Coaching / Business Coaching focuses on people discovering their potential and to reach higher levels of themselves.
