Leadership Spirit of Martial Arts Organisation
Leadership Spirit of Martial Arts Organisation
It is easy to know what the leadership spirit of an organisation is like by feeling the organisational culture. If the culture is strong, positive, and embracing then we know the spirit or energy of the leader is where it should be.
We teach our martial arts students to be perceptive on picking up on the traits of an aggressor. In a self defence situation it is important to quickly try to get a feel for the energy or way of the
attacker. In so doing we may be able to alter the timing, speed, or intensity of the counter attack in order to achieve the best possible outcome. Likewise, as a good leader in a martial arts
organisation, we know that our spirit or way is so important in achieving our strategic objective.
Our spirit encompasses many things. Practically speaking, our spirit is all about how we think about things, our points of view, simply put the ways we think about those around us. It's about how we think about our staff, our suppliers, our employees, the parents and friends of students and so on. If we think about these people in a certain way, we display a spirit or give off energy that is warm, accepting and positive. We know as martial artists that people are very perceptive and aware about how others think. We know that people can often interpret your actions as a leader not only by what you do, but also by your body language. You communicate your spirit or energy through your actions, and words.
As a leader in a martial arts organisation, get this wrong and your martial arts school will not prosper. It will be sure to wither on the vine, and other schools will look after your students. Your students will, through the natural way, polarise to those schools who have a pleasant way about them, a way that is about a genuine concern and care for them as students of the martial arts and as people generally.
Some martial arts instructors and leaders confuse the "tradition" of the martial arts with the "way" of the martial arts. By this I mean that leaders in some schools have a "treat 'em mean ... keep 'em keen" mentality. This is an old fashioned and outdated point of view in the modern martial arts. This attitude does not survive and for those schools who are able to enrol reasonable numbers of students while maintaining this attitude, they sadly attract a small percentage of enrollments who think this is the way of the martial arts. These schools, however, never survive to become significant, prosperous schools.
