Leadership Step Four To Success

In step four in our leadership training system you have to think about and plan around this question

. What obstacles or challenges my come up?

This is the point where you go back and take a closer look at your plan. Assumptions are part of the game. We have to make them, but we also have to identify them and come up with alternatives if they are wrong. Is that assumption valid and correct? Sometimes you just won't know at this stage in the process.

But you can look for obstacles ahead of time and prepare for them. Now is the time to make a backup plan just in case these obstacles should arise. A backup plan, a different path to the finish line can often maintain the momentum you and you team are producing. To stop take time to think of all your alternative possibilities in the heat of the quest can cause a loss in momentum or worse still could cause you to rush and miss your best alternative options to the challenge or obstacle.

Think about it! If the assumptions in your plan are not right, what then. A leaders job is about being in charge and guiding the process forward in as smooth a manor as possible. Do you know if assumptions are a part of your plan? Identify the assumptions, then come up with a course of action if the assumption should prove to be wrong.

If something goes slightly wrong, and you correct quickly, most observers will not even know the correction was made.

Sometimes, well actually most times there will be elements of your plan that are absolutely beyond your control. These things, weather, natural disasters, shipping problems, strange decision by other people and the dreaded politics of a situation may come up in some situations, are some examples. Many things result in totally illogical actions being taken by other people.

So think your plan through. Look for the obstacles that may arise - expect them. Have a backup plan if they do come up. Be ready to act on your backup plan, and let the others on you team know what the backup plan is.

Leaders should also have a backup person - a second in command and maybe a whole chain of command. Whenever a group is involved in a task the group must have a leader - all the time - in every situation.

Step 4 What Challenges Or Obstacles Might Come Up?

Above all expect to succeed.

Make sure nothing can stop you.

Be bigger than any problem.

Remember you're not perfect - but you don't have to be.
