Leading Homebuilders Focusing On Energy Efficient Homes

The energy efficient home is likely to become the standard in the United States as

builders look for better ways to compete with the existing stock of houses. Eco-conscious consumers are spending more and more money on energy efficient upgrades, which is causing builders to look for ways of increasing the value of their green homes. The good news is that the nation's largest home builders like KB Home and Beazer are on board for offering greener products.

Pulte Homes' Villa Trieste project in Las Vegas won the "2009 Production Builder Award" from the U.S. Green Building Council. Their new energy efficient home model debuting in 29 states includes: seamless construction, "low-emissive" energy efficient windows, blown-in insulation, high efficiency water-saving toilets, built-in ventilation systems, Energy Star appliances, smart thermostats, non-toxic paints and rooftop solar panels. These homes offer 55% improved energy efficiency from their solar roof panels and 35% decreased water usage, the builders say. "We are thrilled to receive this high honor from our industry's foremost authority on green building," said Scott Wright, president of Pulte Homes' Las Vegas division. "Providing energy efficient homes is a win-win opportunity. Homeowners benefit from lower utility bills in addition to having the satisfaction in knowing they are making a positive impact on the environment."

Large builders aren't the only ones investing in building homes that are energy efficient. TMS Architects and Bruss Construction are two small New Hampshire companies that are offering customizable house packages that include three different tiers of home energy savings and more than 400 choices that range from landscaping, solar energy, water power, Energy Star appliances, lighting, plumbing fixtures and LEED certification. The homes range from 1,600 square feet to 2,800 square feet and $300,000 to $600,000. This smaller size wastes no space, developers say, and includes high-quality amenities in the kitchens and bathrooms.

"Materials are built to last and if you look at it financially, owners will save $8,400 a year in heating and electricity costs," said Robert Carty of TMS Architects. James Bruss, owner of Bruss Construction, added, "This is the right product for the right time."

In January, Beazer Homes announced that all new homes built would be energy efficient. "Now, more than ever, home buyers are looking for ways to save money on long-term energy and maintenance costs," explained Ian McCarthy, president and CEO of Beazer Homes. "Our eSMART homes are a direct response to what our customers have told us is most important." He adds that each energy efficient home will come with additional air sealing, home insulation, windows, an energy monitor, programmable thermostat, compact fluorescent light bulbs and other Energy Star products.
