Learn How to Fly RC Electric Helicopters
Choosing which of the rc electric helicopters to buy is the easy part. Once a person has their helicopter, they have to learn how to fly it. Flying it is the trickier part. A new helicopter owner should never take their rc 'copter out and fly it without knowing what to do. That is just asking for the helicopter to break and someone to get hurt.
There are several things that a person can do to learn how to fly rc helicopters easily and with no risk of damage to the helicopter or the pilot.
Flight simulators. Most people think of flight simulators as a game. But for owners of rc electric helicopters they can be a training and practice tool. Helicopters aren't easy to fly. They have their own particular quirks because of the rotors. A simulator lets the new pilot see all the drastic things that can happen, and learn to avoid them, before it happens to their brand new rc heli. A crash in a simulator hurts no one and doesn't total a new helicopter.
Practice bad conditions. Once the pilot feels comfortable flying around in the simulator during perfect conditions, ramp it up and make the conditions as bad as possible. Add in wind, rain, fly at night, keep the helicopter out of trim, or make them all happen at the same time. It is better to learn how to react to bad conditions in the simulator than it is when flying the real rc helicopters.
Fly the real thing. Once the pilot is comfortable with all flying conditions, it's time to move up to the real thing. But, with training gear, at least at first. The training gear will let the pilot get a feel for how their aircraft flies. The rc electric helicopters will react in the same ways that the simulators do, but each helicopter has its own personality and quirks.
Start small. Flying the real rc electric helicopters after the simulators is a good start, but don't get over confident. Take off the training tools and start with short flights. Watch how the helicopter reacts to every move on the control sticks, and how real world conditions affect it.
Learn precision. When the pilot is completely comfortable with their helicopter and can fly it fairly well, it's time to learn how to be precise. Set up a grid and practice landing the helicopter in one square, changing which square to land in every time. After the pilot can land in that square every time, make it smaller. After that, land on a small spot. Set up an obstacle course to fly around. Zig zag around poles. All these drills may seem time consuming and boring, but once they are done it's time to move on to trick flying.
For the person who has always wanted to fly, but can't, rc electric helicopters are a great way to get some of that feeling. It can take some time to learn how to fly, but these tips can make it easier.
