Learning To Get The Business Outcome You Are Aiming For

The most important thing that any lean project can do is strive for continuous improvement

. It is not enough to put a plan in place, complete all of the steps of the plan and then be satisfied of the results. You cannot be satisfied with the results. Sure you can be happy with what you have accomplished, but you and your team should be looking for the next round of progress and not sit back and rest on your laurels.

Sure, you have done a good job and accomplished a great thing, but there is always more to do, more to accomplish and more leaning to do. This is what sets a great program apart from a good lean program. Constant improvement and continuing to search for the next opportunity to make an even bigger improvement over what you had already done is the only way to move forward. But you have to be looking for these opportunities and search for ways to exploit them to your benefit.

In these sorts of cases, it'll take the village to help you. Think of the old saying, it takes a village to raise a child; well some of that same sort of thinking can help in your lean management process. The village in this case is the entire business and everybody that works within the company are therefore inhabitants of the village. That means that everybody within the organization should be a part of the solution and part of the process of fixing the problems.

But not only should they all be working together in fixing the problem, everybody in the village should be wanting to help identify and even make suggestions as to how the problems may perhaps be fixed. It can be a bit overwhelming to have everybody at once trying to identify and show what the problems may be, but they should all feel free to do so.

You want the guys in the warehouse to help point out what could be fixed just as you want the team from accounting to make suggestions on how to save money throughout the business. Neither area should feel that their ideas and their suggestions are of any less value than any others, or for that matter, they should not feel as though their suggestions are of any greater value than anybody else"s. It really should be looked at as a team effort and everybody on the team should be looking for continuous improvement.
