Learning To Master The Junction Routine
When mastering how to drive a car forget about what you see on the TV
. Well for now do anyway until you have mastered the basics of car control. Then you have to master the basics of proper car control.
You need to know all about
The Accelerator
The Foot Brake
The Clutch
The Gears
The Steering Wheel
The Handbrake or Parking Brake
The Ancillary controls
You need to know how they work, what they do and how to use them properly. The 3 most important basic steps to learning to drive a car, using the correct controls, are pulling away from a stationary position, changing gear and braking.
If you think about it, whatever you need to do in a car whilst driving along any road can be broken down into its basic elements of pulling away, also known as accelarating, changing gear or braking.
If you see a pedestrian crossing ahead, for example, you would be braking followed by 'pulling away' and then 'changing gear'. If you want to turn right across a busy road, for example, you would be 'stopping' followed by 'pulling away' and then 'changing gear'.
This is commonly known as the junction routine. The junction routine is what you need to do every time you approach a junction. All junctions are the same really in principle whether a basic left turn into a side road or a multiple-lane roundabout.
The junction itself is not that important at the moment its the approach that counts. Whenever you approach any junction you must follow these steps each and every time. Talk yourself through this routine enough times and eventually you will start following the procedure naturally.
First check your mirrors then give a signal. Why are you checking your mirrors? You are checking your mirrors so you are aware of what is around you. Giving a signal notifies other road users as to what you intend to do.
Check your position and speed and look ahead deciding what action to take and what gear to use. If for example you are slowing to turn right across traffic then you will need to choose first gear.
When braking you need to learn what distances are safe to brake at allowing yourself plenty of time to brake without endangering others.
This in a nutshell is the junction routine and learnt and taught properly will ensure that you are a competent and safe driver and in turn will contribute to keeping our roads safe.
