Life Skills: Relevance for the School Children
Life Skills: Relevance for the School Children
What are Life Skills?
Today's children face daunting challenges: violence, environmental degradation, disease, discrimination & poverty. Beyond reading, writing and arithmetic, a child's ability to navigate this increasingly complex world requires a broad set of competencies: cognitive, social and practical.
UNICEF defines the term Life Skills' as a broad group of psychosocial and interpersonal skills that can help children make informed decisions, communicate effectively and navigate through their surroundings.
Or in simple words Life Skills are those skills that help an individual tide through the examination of life smoothly and efficiently and come out with flying colours. Incidentally, these are the skills that are rarely part of any standard curriculum in Indian schools. No wonder, we see large number of cases where the engineers, architects, CAs and other professionals fail to find suitable careers for themselves. And in other examples, successful career people fail miserably in their personal lives!
Ever wondered why this happens at all? The answer is not too difficult to understand, these people lack in one or the other way in Life Skills! Apparently they were like any other student of their age except for the big and invisible difference~ absence of Life Skills in their personalities!
Why Life Skills?
According to Dr. Howard Gardner, a psychologist and professor of neuroscience from Harvard University, who developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) in 1983, human beings have nine different kinds of intelligence that reflect different ways of interacting with the world.
But, traditionally, schools have emphasized the development of only logical intelligence (mathematical and reasoning) and linguistic intelligence (mainly reading and writing).
But statistics reveal that to be successful in a professional and personal life, it requires only 15% of Logical and Linguistic Intelligence and 85% of Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Intelligence which is something that comes under the Life Skills category.
But, unfortunately Life Skills Training Modules are not part of a regular curriculum in most schools in India.
That is why Maxxx EduVenture has come up with an out-of-the-box idea of bringing these most essential and contemporary Life Skills Training Modules to the Schools!
