. Liposculpting is the removal of small amounts of fat in fuller areas of fat. This is done to sharpen features and attract attention to the muscles underneath by giving the illusion of a muscular like appearance.

This procedure can be done in on the neck, lower cheeks, upper abdomen, outer buttocks, calves and ankles. This procedure is known for its reshaping effects being noticeable within hours. It has also been known to stimulate skin tightening and to achieve precise results.

Liposculpting was pioneered in the late 20th century. Liposuction has been a working surgical procedure for about 36 years and many new techniques continue to be invented. Since the tumescent technique was discovered in 1985 surgeons have continued to polish and refine its effectiveness. Its safety, precision, creating desirable results and recovery time have all been refined and added to over time.

Surgeons have studied a variety of techniques that provide patients with options based on their needs and desires. By the 80's the procedure was beginning to confront negative reactions. These negative reactions were due to patients experiencing excessive bleeding and unattractive curves of the skin after surgery. In 1985, Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein, discovered an alternative technique called the tumescent technique.

The tumescent technique provided for the patients to have the liposuction performed with a local anesthetic as opposed to a general anesthetic. The local anesthetic was made of a combination of lidocaine and epinephrine. The challenging part of the discovery was finding the correct dosage.

A much smaller cannula, called the michrocannula, which is the tool used to loosen and extract the fat from the body was also invented. The michrocannula had a diameter of about 2mm. This made the procedure much less of a strain on the body and much less painful.

The word tumescent means to engorge or to fill up with liquid. For liposuction purposes large volumes of highly diluted solutions create a local anesthesia, which is injected into the subcutaneous fat. This technique became so popular and ground braking because it practically eliminated the need for general anesthesia, the problem of excessive blood loss, and less disfiguration of the skin.

Liposuction procedures require the patient's full understanding of what occurs in order to extract fat from the body. They should also seek a thorough understanding of what to expect during and after the surgery. The patient should have a good relationship with the surgeon. Know the surgeons experience.
