Lismore is a great base to explore the Far North coast of New South Wales

The city of Lismore in the Far North of New South Wales is an excellent place to stay if you are looking to explore everything this magnificent part of NSW has to offer. Within easy reach of the beaches, the pastoral lands as well as the beautiful National Parks of the North Coast area, Lismore has got it all.

True, Lismore does not enjoy a worldwide reputation like neighboring Byron Bay. That's one of its attractions. It is a quintessentially Australian town with a real feeling of "fair dinkum" Aussie hospitality. Another one of Lismore's attractions is its central location. Just 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) from Byron Bay, it is short trip to the beach. It is also just a stone's throw from a few of Australia's most magnificent National Parks, like Mt. Warning, the Border Ranges and Nightcap National Park.

If "getting there is half the fun," then a day trip from Lismore to any of the North Coast attractions is a good deal of fun and a great way to get to know the North Coast, too. For instance, if you set out from Lismore for a day at the beach at Byron Bay or Lennox Head, you will pass through the quaint town of Bangalow. Bangalow is a combination of beautiful historical architecture and stylish and sophisticated tastes.

Head north out of Lismore in the direction of Nightcap National Park or Border Ranges National Park and stop off in Nimbin. Like Bangalow, Nimbin is a small town whose main street is lined with classic Australian timber structures. That is about all Nimbin has in common with Bangalow, though. Nimbin was a forgotten town until the initial Rainbow Festival was held there in the hippie era. The event was a huge success and the hippies stayed. Today, a trip to Nimbin is a trip back in time to the Flower Power era. The daily shuttle bus tours from Lismore to Nimbin are among the most popular in the region.

If you are lucky enough to be in Lismore over the second Sunday of the month, then make it a point to go to the Channon Market. The Channon Market was established in 1976 as a means for local growers and craftspeople to display and sell their goods and produce. It proved to be so well liked, it had to be moved from Channon Hall to the larger Coronation Park. These days, over 250 colorful stalls sell arts and crafts, offer therapeutic massage, do kids face painting and sell delicious foods from all over the world. In the center of the oval, you will find music, dancing and entertainment. The atmosphere at the Channon Market is always electric with excitement and fun.

When you return to your Lismore accommodation, it won't be the end of your adventures. The city of Lismore itself is a wonderful place to explore. Its relaxing atmosphere is just perfect for slowing down and getting to know the city and its people. Do a little shopping in town and stop in "for a yarn" with the locals. In the downtown area you'll find excellent cafes, restaurants and shops to explore. You will not regret making Lismore your base in Far North New South Wales.
