The Balinese gamelan orchestra is altogether composed of 60 to 80 musical instruments with different varieties in each village. Balinese gamelan instruments include bronze and bamboo xylophones as well as gongs and a number of gong chimes, such as the solo instrument trompong, and a variety of percussion instruments like cymbals, bells, drums and the anklung (a bamboo rattle). Two sizes of bamboo flutes are also both used in theatrical music, and a rebab (two-stringed spike fiddle).
Each Balinese gamelan has its own instrumentation and the repertory, which depend on its function. Each of the various forms of dance and drama has a gamelan which specializes in its music.
The Balinese gamelan is required in the islands Bali-Hindu religion for the success of the thousands of ceremonies performed every year for over many centuries. Its function is to entertain the gods and deified ancestors at various ceremonies.
