Music Engineering Schools 101

The last time you went to a concert what did you notice

? Was it the killer solo the drummer did, or the amazing vocal quality. Regardless of which one blew you away, it wouldn't have been nearly as impressive without the help of the music engineer. Not only would the audience not hear the best sound, the musicians themselves wouldn't be able to hear what they needed. While most people don't really know what music engineers do and therefore assume they so nothing more than handle the equipment like a stage hand, it is actually far more extensive and complicated than that and should be preceded by attending music engineering school.

Music engineers have to be familiar with every aspect of a show in order to do their job. So what are the major skills you will need in to become a music engineer and do you need to go to school for it?

One of the most basic music engineers need understand is the different types of equipment necessary in their line of work. This equipment includes amplifiers, microphones, audio lines, monitors and mixing boards along with many others. Music engineers need to understand exactly how each of these instruments works so that they can manipulate them properly because they may have to fill different roles for different shows. They may be mixing the sound the audience hears, setting up the sound equipments, or controlling the sound that each artist hears on his monitors.

In addition to understanding the equipment, music engineers need to understand the nuances of how their role varies depending on the type of music and venue. They will need to set up very differently depending on these factors.

Because music engineers operate within a team of other people working the show, they need to be effective communicators.

They need to communicate well within the team in order to keep the event organized. They also need to be able to coordinate with other people outside of the team regarding the venue and tour details. They also need to be able to take the conflicting opinions of the various band members regarding the group's sound and meld them into one unified result.

As long as you can do all of this you will be able to fill any of the necessary roles as needed.

Music engineers play a key role in the success of a live show, so you need to train appropriately if you plan to go into the field.
