Some small businesses that have been serving for a few years make the mistake of ignoring local marketing because of their history to that particular location where they are. After all it is clear that they would not need to show the locals about the business thats been there for a while.

The issue becomes a problem if they are in an area where the population is constantly changing. if your business is surrounded by many rental units, more than likely those tenants are constantly moving out and new ones come in, so you need to tell them your business is there, locally. Another thing to consider is the issue of growth because of new development, it means there are many new visitors who would like to relocate their services to the area and they need to know about your business.

This constant change can be addressed with regular local marketing, but here is the kicker, traditional print marketing in newspapers or phone books may be ignored with todays technology. I have been searching for businesses online for over 10 years like so many others. But with todays technology online goes a little further, reaching those who use mobile devices. With the new smartphones and tablets out there, this is the best way to reach out the cyber audience in your area, those who dont subscribe to newspapers and like me, throw away anything that resembles mail advertising.


Local marketing has changed in recent years, it means a little more than just the location of a business. Today local marketing is targeted to people who use their mobile devices to find a businesses and their next shopping stop. The direct link to the newest mobile devices, the apps that are being developed for smart phones and similar devices use a location feature similar to the GPS to know where the device is and therefore when someone is looking for a particular business such as sub sandwiches for example, the smart phone will show the closest restaurants and sub shops in the area where your device is located at the moment.

So, thinking on reaching your cyber audience and the growth of a community, your business needs to seriously think of the new marketing alternatives to the print ads, sure we still need business cards, brochures and what not, but a percentage of your marketing budget should be invested in online internet marketing techniques.
