Looks, Personality Or Occupation?

UK Asian cultures have traditionally been concerned with profession and occupation when considering potential marriage prospects

. This way of thinking has generally been driven by first generation Asian parents who are encouraged to establish both elevated societal standings & financial prosperity for thier children. The leading Asian Dating service, AsianD8online wanted to discover whether this notion held water amongst the westernised second generation Asian population. AsianD8online is one of the fastest growing Asian Dating networks in the UK and they regularly undertake market research for the Asian Dating market. A survey was subsequently undertaken to rank the significance of occupation, appearance and personality in the search for a partner. The results indicated that personality was by far the most essential characteristic when searching for a potential suitor. What is of great interest is that the results oppose the parent's view of occupation being the most important trait when evaluating a partner for their offspring.

UK Asian parents have forever been engrossed in the process of finding a marriage suitor for their westernised second generation children. Parents will frequently look to their extended network of friends and family to find eligible single men and women with a clear mindset of what they desire in a suitor. What is of significance is the difference in weight placed on what parents identify as important traits compared to their children. Parents have by tradition placed a greater importance upon the suitor's academic qualifications and occupation in the matchmaking process. Professions such as medicine, dentistry, banking and law are regarded very highly. Both personality and the attractiveness of the suitor are often viewed as a secondary thought.

Mrs Kumar, the mother of Reema, who is a single Hindu on AsianD8online stated why occupation is so important to parents" "We have been looking for someone for my daughter for the past year. When I get a phone call from someone who is interested the first question I will ask is what they do for a living followed by their qualifications. I think it is essential from a parent's perspective as both future employment prospects and financial wellbeing are very important. Attractiveness and personality are also important but I would only consider this once I'm satisfied of their profession."

However, according to a recent online poll conducted by Asian dating website AsianD8online, the second generation children have contrasting views to their parents. When asked to rank the following for importance when considering a potential suitor (785 respondents) only 5% stated occupation, 29% stated looks and the overwhelming majority, 66%, said personality was the most important.

Reema, the daughter of Mrs Kumar, from AsianD8online, also supports this notion; "my mum is obviously fixated upon my future partner's occupation, but for me it's all about compatibility. I want to be able to connect with my hubby so personality is key!"

So why is there such a difference between the two schools of thought? AsianD8onlines own dating expert Sujan Shah thinks it's down to a cultural shift; "Asian kids are bound to be a little different in their thinking to Asian parents and so it's no surprise that so many of our members perceive personality as important. Besides many of these Asian singles have financial security so occupation of the potential husband or wife becomes less significant"
