The last time the Galaxy made it this far into the postseason was when they won the MLS Cup in 2005. After that championship season, the club has missed the playoffs for three consecutive years. Donovan said the victory was huge for their franchise. The forward continued to say that his team understands what the victory means, "but that's not good enough for us. We're not satisfied. Now, we have a big opportunity to do something special."

Donovan's goal was the 16th of his career in the playoffs, tying Carlos Ruiz's MLS record. Chivas USA coach Preki was disappointed in the loss. The coach stated that his club had plenty of opportunities to pull off a victory. The Chivas had six shots in the first half, and Preki noted that his team had several "moments where they had two against the goalkeeper or two against one" and did not even register a shot on net. Preki told the press L.A. made one play and won the game. Donovan's penalty kick came after Chivas defender Yamith Cuesta fouled Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee. Cuesta wrapped his right leg around Magee's groin in the 70th minute.

On the penalty shot, Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton dove to his left after Donovan drilled the ball on net. Donovan explained what happened on the play. "My thought, actually, was to go to that side," Donovan said of Thornton's dive to the left. "But I saw him step the other way and then start leaning." David Beckham began the play that resulted in Donovan's penalty kick. Becks sent a pass from the right flank to Donovan, who was in the left corner. Donovan then sent a pass to the right side of the penalty area, where Magee received the ball. Becks left the game limping in the 78th minute and had his midsection wrapped with tape on the bench.

The English superstar said somebody kneed him in the back and he immediately felt back spasms. The midfielder thought he twisted his ankle, but reassured his fans that he would be fine. Becks added that he'll wait until tomorrow to see how his back feels. Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made two saves, both in the first half. The goalkeeper's biggest save came in the 32nd minute of the game, when he dove to his right to block Justin Braun's 34-yard shot with both hands.

Los Angeles held Chivas to just three shots in the second half; none of them made it on goal. Chivas USA has struggled in the postseason in recent years. They failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Will Chivas USA make major changes during the offseason to improve their lineup?
