Lpn Job Description And Education Requirements
LPN is a short abbreviation for licensed practical nurse
. This nurse performs different duties with supervision of a physician or RN (registered nurse). In some areas, they may be referred to as an LVN or licensed vocational nurse. A licensed practical nurse may provide services in different healthcare settings such as a hospital or facilities for residential care. Private homes are another setting.
Vocational training is required to become a licensed practical nurse; it lasts between one and two years. This nursing professional may have different specializations in which they have acquired additional training such as obstetrics or oncology. Other education may vary depending on the person's interest. Biology may be a course of interest in high school and they may look to take a course in another language in order to serve patients who live in a mixed cultural area.
Job duties for an LPN include providing patient care but may vary on different levels. This may include helping patients use the restroom, bathe and even physical therapy. Charting details, monitoring patients and collecting samples for testing are other common duties. They also engage in various tasks under doctor or RN supervision. They usually don't perform duties such as induction of anesthesia or surgery. However, they help patients maintain comfort needed while they are receiving treatment. Some are known to provide information to area community members through teachings.
Aside from attending schools that specialize in LPN programs and training, hospitals are known for providing training as well. History of chemistry and nutrition may also be needed upon entering a specialized training course. Training includes a variety of hand-on work such as lab work and clinical nursing skills. Such training prepares students to work directly with patients. There is an exam that needs to be passed for those looking to become a licensed practical nurse. Passing the exam allows individuals to practice nursing in the state or region. In some cases, testing requirements may vary depending on where you intend to nurse. There are state board groups and organizations that can help you learn necessary requirements.
LPN training is often a good place to start for those aspiring to become an RN. Registered nurses tend to have higher salaries because they have advance job duties and more responsibility. While there are different universities and community colleges that offer nursing education, there are a variety of online courses as well. You'll want to research recommended schools and courses since some may not be offered by accredited schools. Accreditation is important since certification may not be granted, obtained or recognized by the state or region. Because students are being trained to provide healthcare services to the general public, strict guidelines are enforced to ensure proper training is received and the safety of the public is maintained.
Even if you obtain online training toward
LPN certification, it likely won't satisfy all requirements needed to get licensed. Hands-on training and face-to-face interaction are other elements that should be a part of your training.
