In the far North West of England you will find the Lake District National Park, which is undoubtedly England's most popular natural outdoor playground for backpackers, mountaineers, hikers, mountain bikers, kayakers, windsurfers alike. The road infrastructure is good, so it is easily accessible from London and all other areas of the UK.

This area is also popular for anyone who appreciates the spectacular scenery carved from the Ice Age. You will find large rocks, called erratics, that have been dropped here from the now long gone glacier that once scraped its way through this landscape as well has huge U shaped valleys where the glacier literally ripped through the landscape.

The lakes here might not be as large as those found in North America, but they are the largest in the UK. They were also formed by glaciations and include Lake Windermere, the largest, and Lake Coniston.

Make sure you visit some of the lake side towns of, Grasmere, Keswick, Coniston, Windermere, and Ambleside. In the summer months they are bustling with outdoor folk, but the Lake District can be visited at all times of year. As it is located in one of the wettest parts of the UK, be sure to take your wet weather gear

There walks for all ages and abilities. When you get there, visit one of the tourist information centres. They will have maps and will be able to give you advice on local walks etc.

There are some great mountain bike trails in both Whinlatter and Grizedale Forests. Both have well established routes for beginners and those who are more experienced alike.

This is a great area for camping, but for those who like their comforts, there are also many Bed and Breakfasts in the towns mentioned above.
