Making Halloween A Treat!

? Yes indeed, that time of year has come upon us, goblins, ghosts, fairytale creatures, and even candy. The season of sweets can make anyone break loose from their healthy diet, considering all those easily abundant candy resources. While a treat here and there may not be a problem, finding yourself snagging handfuls of candy for yourself can definitely be counterproductive to a healthy diet. For those of you trying to keep yourself from putting on a few pounds and working against your diet, try a bit of strategy to keep yourself (and even your kids) from overindulging on sweets.

Avoiding temptation

Often, the best way to prevent yourself from doing something, is to avoid the situation altogether. If you plan on handing candy out this year, the best thing you can do is buy candy that you dont like (unfortunately that can mean that you hand out candy not many others will like). Another measure you can take is to plan to procrastinate. Buy candy at the last minute, because all those sweets hanging around can definitely attract lite fingers. At the end of the night, give all the leftovers away and get them out of the house, especially if you have a difficult time resisting the force. Something else to consider is not buying candy at all. Instead, you can try something else.

Alternative treats


Instead of candy, try something different. Toys, even simple ones like army men, can make a nice and fun replacement for sugary sweets. You wont have to worry about any candy sitting around and calling to you. Think of it like the old Cracker Jack boxes, popcorn with a little toy inside. To tell the truth, the toy was sometimes the best part. Rings, play jewelry, dinosaurs, and even temporary tattoos are all a nice treat, and better yet, they are healthy for the kids (and teenagers) who get them this Halloween.

Healthy treats

Another option is the healthy treat. Here you have to be careful, as most parents will make children throw away any fresh fruit or unsealed packages. Your best bet is going to be some shopping on the snack isle- such as boxes of raisins and other packaged fruits, nuts, or even baked pumpkin seeds. These treats are a great alternative to the sugary madness, and leftovers may actually be something to look forward to. It can also make the dentists job a little easier, too (although the Tooth Fairy may be a little upset).

Get out there and roam, too!

Kids wander the street in search of treats, but that doesnt mean that you have to stay home. Get out there and roam with them. If you have some youngsters, this may not be a problem. But if you have a few in the older crowd, who dont want their parents tagging along, consider finding a friend who has some youngsters to tag along with. Youd be surprised at how much distance your feet cover in one night. Try to avoid using any mode of transportation except your feet or bicycles, so that your body gets a good workout to burn off any candy you might have snacked upon when no one was looking.


Stay on the wagon

If you still feel the temptation, remember what your goals are. Candy is definitely a treat, but thats what it should be. If you know you cant stop with just one piece, its best to try to avoid letting yourself indulge at all. Instead, grab some fruit to feast upon to satisfy that craving.

Halloween is a time of fun activities and family time, so this year, do your best to keep the little roaming rascals happy with some healthy alternatives.
