You must make a visit to the famous palace ofMalia built at about 3 km towards the East. The palace is considered no less than the palaces of Knossos and Faistos in its archaeological importance. All these flourished during the same period as well. Most of the ruins which are preserved are dated back to the New Palace period i.e. 17th 15th centuries B.C. Apart from the palace you may also visit the interesting necropolis which is found near the coast towards the North East of the palace. The most important part of the necropolis has been excavated at Chryssolakos, with the big funerary complex. You'll be amazed to see the famous necklace in the Archaeological Museum ofHeraklio found here presenting the two bees symbol of fertility.

Apart from visiting the archaeological sites and the recent excavations of the important ruins of the Minoan period you can also visit the worth seeing Church of Panaghia Galatiani. It is well known for its wonderful wall paintings which you are sure to admire. You can also visit lovely sandy beaches ofMalia and nearby beaches of Stalida and Potamos availing all kinds of water activities and swimming to its visitors. You may just sit and relax at the tranquil and quiet beaches towards the eastern end of the long beach in front ofMalia, Heraklio which is far less crowded.

If you happen to visit the village during the month of February you should make a point to attend the local traditional feast celebrated here every year. It is carried on during the Carnical for the revival of the old custom Xynochondros and Mouzoudia'. It is the time to enjoy with the locals wherein they dance, sing and amuse themselves to the full.
