Math Lesson Planning - Prepare Your Students for Success
Dr. H. A. Hasan is both the creator and founder of The Project Hydroplanes Racing Program (PHRP). In the beginning, he decided to present race boats as part of his curriculum due to the makeup of his students. This proved to be a very successful behavior management strategy. Most had family members involved in gangs, and were not interested in the traditional way of learning. Their behaviors were severely self-destructive. This alternative approach to teaching, using hydroplanes in a project-based/performance assessment instructional format, proved to be exactly what the students wanted and needed. Through this program, students who initially complained of boredom in school went on to exhibit great interest in learning. This, he discovered, was due to their interest in the creative aspect of hydroplane design and racing presented to them through this hands-on academic method.
He began teaching fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students about hydroplanes in 1985 where he used the race boats to impress his elementary school learners about the wonders of science, especially the science of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. These first designs were very simple and were comprised of two to three pieces of wood glued together, sanded into shape and painted, with a plastic propeller mounted on the back of the transom section of their hulls. These hydroplanes were powered by rubber bands as their propellers cut through the air. PHRP has now advanced considerably and developed three prototypes with proven records of success from which the students can choose.
The Project Hydroplanes Racing Program (PHRP), of Ha Learning Strategies, Inc., is an alternative teaching strategy designed to integrate math, science, and literacy lesson planning in a format that makes learning fun and exciting. Our goal is to prepare participants for success in the 21st Century, thus, enhancing the healthy growth and development of our nations communities.
