Matheran - A Holiday In The Forest On Top

Nestled amidst the luxuriant green landscapes of the Western Ghats in the Raigad

district of Maharashtra rests a beautiful Hill station called Matheran. Located at an average altitude of 2,516 feet above mean sea level, Matheran is regarded as the smallest hill station of India.

Previously unknown to the larger public, Matheran came to limelight during the British reign. In 1850, Hugh Poyntz Malet discovered Matheran and it was subsequently developed as a hill station by Lord Elphinstone. Again, it was Lord Elphinstone who developed the roadways and the mountain railways in Matheran in the early 1900s.

Matheran literally means 'Forest on Top'. The name is accurate as Matheran is set among plush green forests which boast of rich biodiversity. The dense forest lands of Matheran are rich in flora and fauna. Offering almost 33 viewing points that offer panoramic views of the surrounding natural beauty, Matheran continually enchants its visitors.

Spread over an approximate area of 252 square kilometers, Matheran is one of the premier Eco- sensitive regions of the country and world. As a result, motor vehicles are not allowed in the core area excluding the Matheran town and its immediate surroundings, which constitute the buffer area. Hence, ponies and physically driven rickshaws are the only means of public transport in Matheran.

The major sightseeing attractions of Matheran are the spots like Porcupine Point, Panorama Point, Echo Point, George Point, Louisa Point, Paymaster Park, Panthers' Caves and Hart Point among others. The stellar attraction of Matheran is the Charlotte Lake. It is not only the main water source of the township, but also a major bird-watching centre of Matheran. The verdant green lawn of an age-old Pisarnath Temple on the banks of the lake is also a major attraction. Some other places of tourist interest near Matheran include the ruins of Prabal Fort (of Marathas and Mughals), Morbe Dam, Shrine of Ambernath (1060 AD) and Dharavi River (fishing).

Since it is located on hills, Matheran also offers ample opportunities for adventure sport activities like trekking, hiking and rock-climbing among others and is thronged by the adventure junkies of the country.

Matheran is at a distance of mere 90 and 120 kilometers from Mumbai and Pune, and is well-connected with both these cities. Matheran is accessible by rail from Neral. This Mountain rail covers a distance of 21 kilometers amidst picturesque settings of hillsides, plains, cliffs and the Jambol forests to reach Matheran. Driving up to Dasturi Point and then hiring a pony or proceeding by foot can also take one to Matheran.

A perfect getaway destination from the hustle-bustle of city lives, the unpolluted air, serene mountains and the lush greenery spread all around here is an experience in itself.
