Medicare Goes New Age With Paperless Online Registration
Betting that most baby boomers are computer-literate
, the Social Security Administration has finally embraced paperless online registration for Social Security and Medicare. And the timing couldnt be better. With up to 10,000 people applying for benefits daily and the pace expected to continue for the next 20 years, the Social Security Administration has a lot on its hands.
It only takes 15 minutes or less to complete the process online, says Alan Weinstock, insurance broker at http://www.MedicareSupplementPlans.com. So it makes sense that many baby boomers would apply online for retirement and Medicare benefits and save themselves the time and energy it takes to call or visit their local Social Security Office.
Signing Up for Medicare Online Step-by-Step
Its so easy to do. You just visit MyMedicare.gov and click on the words sign up in the secure sign in section to the upper left-hand side of the welcome page. This will open the registration page. Fill out all the required fields on the registration page and then click continue to submit your registration request. Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries will need to click on the register here hyperlink next to the words Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) Beneficiaries.
Once your registration request is processed, you will see a confirmation page advising you that your password will be mailed via the U.S. Postal Service to your address on record with the Social Security Administration (SSA) or the RRB. The letter should arrive within 14 days. If you provided an email address when you registered, you will also receive your password confirmation via email.
If the information you enter does not match with the information on file, your registration will fail. Be sure to update your information with the SSA or RRB.
Other Ways that Medicare Has Stepped into the Computer Age
Online registration is just one more step in the on-going technology wave that has hit Medicare.
Now you can manage your health information and improve how you communicate with your health care providers by using a computer, too.
Personal Health Records (PHR) allows you to keep track of health information like illnesses and the date of your last physical. The benefit is that instead of having your health information in a variety of different places, it is all maintained in a single location making it easier to find and access. And what is best is that it is all under your control. To learn more, check out

Another technical advancement that benefits Medicare beneficiaries is Electronic Prescribing (sometimes referred to as e-Prescribing or eRX). This is a way for health care providers to prescribe medications by sending prescriptions to the pharmacy via a secured computer. It allows your doctors to see what drugs your plan offers and what drugs have been previously prescribed to avoid harmful drug interactions. Plus when linked to your PHR it provides an on-going history of your medications. No more illegible handwritten or misplaced prescriptions!
