Meditation Tips For Beginners

Meditation is the discipline of concentrating your thoughts to achieve spiritual and inner peace. It is an extension of contemplation, reflection and introspection. Read on to discover simple meditation tips for beginners.

Meditation is universal. It is not confined to the boundaries of any race, religion, gender, age or any other demographic attribute. Anyone can meditate, however this ancient art has evolved over millennia and today proposes a plethora of different names, types, techniques and forms. So where does a beginner start?

Meditation in its most intrinsic form can easily be learnt and applied by anyone. It is a personal journey, an experience unique to you. It is primarily used to relax your mind, release your spiritual energy, focus your thoughts and discipline your intellect. Let's look at the easiest form of meditation, particularly useful for complete beginners. This method focuses on breathing:

Note: It is imperative that you meditate in a quiet environment, away from noise, distractions and outside interference. Pick somewhere comfortable and serene where you won't be disturbed.

Step 1:

If you can, sit on the floor in the cross-legged or lotus position (use a floor mat for comfort if necessary). If you cannot sit in this position, you can use a chair. Ensure any footwear is removed and you're wearing loose, comfortable clothing.

Step 2:

Ensure your back is as straight as possible and place your hands in your lap one underneath the other, palms facing upward. Light a candle or burn an incense stick for ambience if you wish.

Step 3:

Close your eyes. Remove any thoughts from your mind and begin to take deep, slow breaths in and out. Breathe only through your nose. Concentrate on your breathing. Focus on the sound of inhaling and exhaling. Focus on the air going right down into your body and then coming back out as you exhale.

Step 4:

Continue to focus on your breathing. Once you are feeling completely relaxed, begin to focus on your inner energy. Allow this energy to take over your whole body. Feel yourself becoming consumed by peace and tranquillity.

Step 5:

Continue meditating for as long as you wish, remember there is no time limit. Take yourself on a journey of self-realization. Let your mind guide you. Once you have been in this state for a while your mind will feel refreshed, you will feel totally relaxed and in a contemplative mood.

Congratulations! You have just successfully mastered the simplest form of meditation. This is a great technique you can use at any time to bring you peace, inner-strength and spiritual empowerment.
