Microsoft adds new HPC Server as well as the possibility of SETI
Microsoft today released an updated version of Windows HPC Server 2008 R2
, which can tap into the calculation of resources across the enterprise, as well as a system of cloud computing.
Company hopes that the new HPC server functions will be more attractive to corporate IT managers , in particular those who are looking for increase speed Excel data crunching.
new HPCMicrosoft, or High Performance Computing, the server can also be managed from the existing Windows administration tools and the HPC supports the trend of becoming what he once specialized infrastructure of the island, to be woven the rest of the IT processes, said Kyril Faenov, director general of the Microsoft High Performance Computing Group.
Update Server HPC can scavenge for calculating the cycles of other systems running on networks that are preloaded with an agent. the upcoming Service Pack 1 will add the server to the public also use the cycles of cloud computing, Microsoft said.
system administrator defines the parameters that allow to calculate these cycles to be used. The settings can be put on trial in the background on your PC or stop the moment a user touches the keyboard.
options are similar to those in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI @home system that can compute cycles available on computers from several million to run calculations.
Faenov he said, adding capacity to the Windows product will help expand HPC beyond a limited number of users now able to benefit from technology. Microsoft believes that businesses and governments are fundamentally becomes dependent on a large scale simulation and analysis, he said.
Although the Microsoft HPC can handle thousands of processors, Linux is still the dominant operating system for the PC end is very high. Linux runs 91% of the Top 500 supercomputers, when Windows is only 1%. Microsoft is now aiming primarily for Windows and medium to small HPC clusters.
Addison Snell, an analyst Intersect360 Research, said the update brings Microsoft Windows Server according to the direction of the High Performance Computing.
But today, said Cray HPC 2008 R2 will be available on the supercomputer Cray CX1 deskside that supports both Linux and Windows. Cray CX1 costs from $25,000 to $100,000, and supports up to 96-core CPU.
Cray CX1 speed is variable, depending on system configuration and whether it uses no graphics accelerators or not, but if it is at Help chips Intel is its speed is probably on the order of 5 TFLOPS, said Barry bold, vice president of products Crays.
Cray enabled dual-boot capabilities, thickening, and said that Microsoft has enabled HPC functionality of its software that helps run both operating systems in the same cluster.
rival Cray SGI also announced that its personal supercomputer Octane III will work with Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 . SGI also said it intends to extend support for Microsoft HPC Server Rackable to the server and other product lines in the future.
