When model train hobbyist refer to scale their talking about the size of their model train as compared to the real size of its prototype. The following is a list of the four most popular scales of model trains:
1. G scale
2. O scale - has a ratio of 1:48.
These two scales are grouped into the category of larger scale trains. Both run on the number 1 track.
3. HO scale
4. N scale
Each of these have their own purposes and advantages. In addition to the four most popular scales it is worth mentioning these scales as well:

Gauge refers to the size of the track, and with so many different companies making trains and tracks, they all agreed that they would have to agree on the sizes they would make, so that the trains and tracks would be interchangeable. The collector has two types of gauges to choose from and they are narrow and standard gauge.
