Modern Techniques Used for a CT Survey

Determining property lines in your Connecticut town, mapping out part of the coast of Long Island Sound, and zoning are all instances a survey is needed. In general, surveying is the method of determining two- or three-dimensional points on the surface of the Earth and the angles between them. These points become reference for establishing boundaries or creating maps. In the past, however, manual methods would have been used for a survey in Connecticut. In the present, laser scanning technology is used to capture and map out these points.

Laser scanning shortens the time for a Connecticut survey and assists surveyors with capturing complex and hard-to-reach surfaces. In traditional surveying, a second visit may be needed to verify points; with laser scanning, however, all data is captured the first time.

A computerized image is the result of laser scanning, and this image can be used later for two-dimensional drawings. To create this three-dimensional image, a laser scanner sends out a beam of light in the direction of an object and measures the time it takes to return. This value is added to a three-dimensional graph (X, Y, and Z coordinates). The scanner continues to send out beams of light in the direction of the object and measures each. Each time a beam returns, an additional point is added, and a point cloud made up of thousands of these coordinates is created. The point cloud forms a three-dimensional image, once all angles between points are calculated, and is used by surveyors later.

These three-dimensional images are often created for civil and structural engineering projects, which usually require a two-dimensional drawing. The three-dimensional, computerized image can be traced to produce a traditional engineering drawing with views of the front, side, and top.

Surveying, however, involves more than this mathematical and engineering components. If, for example, you contact a Connecticut survey company to map out the boundaries of your property, a surveyor will plot the coordinates, research the property, and gather information about its history to determine the correct boundary. All of this information, from the technical to historical, will be used to accurately determine a land boundary or property line.
