While these services are helpful to customers like you, not all monitoring tools will be able to get visibility into them. Find out what kinds of partnerships your PaaS provider has, and if theyre integrated with any APM solution thats suitable for you and your application.

Another important consideration in your evaluation of APM tools is auto-scaling capabilities. Depending on the APM tool and the IaaS/PaaS provider, some products will be able to automatically scale up and down your application based on performance metrics like response time, CPU utilization or memory. That is to say, when your application is running slow due to heavy load, your APM tool will automatically provision more resources for your application. If your application has a high rate of change and variable load, this could save you lots of time and money.

The cloud has come a long way in the last few years, but there are still some areas where it needs to improve. Performance monitoring is one of those areas. The good news is, there are tools available that are cloud- and production-ready, and some of these are even integrated with key PaaS providers.
